AKA HERstory Trailblazers

Phi Kappa Omega Chapter again made history in the Evergreen Park, IL community, once again.  As Phi Kappa Omega continues to serve this and the greater Chicagoland community, the chapter knows that it is important to educate our communities on the impact that AKA has had for 110 years.  The PKO History Committee curated the “AKA HERstory Trailblazers” exhibit at the Evergreen Park Library. The exhibit featured pictures and biographies of trailblazing members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, such as: Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson (Hidden Figures), and PKO Charter Members. The exhibit was unveiled to the public on March 31, 2018. During the well-attended event, the “Priceless Pearls” history book was donated to the library. Nicki Seidl, Library Director, accepted the book and informed attendees that the book will not only be available for Evergreen Park residents, but the library participates in the Suburban Interlibrary system and can be checked out by any of the hundreds of thousands of residents that use the system. The exhibit was displayed through July 2018. The event lead was Maricha D. Matthews, Chairman, PKO History and Archives Committee.
